Breaking Into Trucking: What Every Aspiring Driver Should Know
Trucking changed my life. It gave me the freedom to explore the country, build my income, and set the foundation for my future fleet. But before I hit the road, I had a million questions — and no one to ask. If you’re thinking about getting your CDL and launching a career in trucking, here are the essentials I wish someone had told me.
First, know why you want to do this. Trucking is rewarding but demanding. Long hours, solitude, and time away from home can be hard, but the payoff is freedom, high earning potential, and endless opportunity.
Start with a reputable CDL school. Do your research — not all schools are created equal. Some will offer job placement assistance. Others may be connected to companies that will sponsor your tuition in exchange for a work commitment.
Understand the types of trucking jobs. Local, regional, and OTR (over-the-road) each come with different schedules, pay, and lifestyle demands. OTR means you’ll likely be gone for weeks at a time, but it also tends to offer the highest pay and most consistent loads.
You’ll also need to learn the lifestyle. Invest in gear: a GPS made for trucks, comfortable bedding, shower essentials, and a good cooler or electric fridge. Keep healthy snacks and stay active when possible — your body matters out here.
Safety is everything. Never let anyone pressure you to drive tired, sick, or in unsafe conditions. Know your rights and stay empowered.
Lastly, know this: trucking is not just a job. It’s a path to independence, growth, and even business ownership. I started as a company driver. Now, I’m working on building my own fleet.
